Frac Plugs: Composite vs. Dissolvable Performance

This case study evaluates the field performance of different frac plugs, specifically comparing SLB Reaxion dissolvable plugs, Kureha degradable plugs, and SLB composite plugs. The analysis utilizes multiple datasets to assess the initial rate at drop and pre-sand perforation friction. A critical metric for operational success in this study is maintaining adequate perforation friction, as very low friction levels often indicate an excess flow area caused by plug leaks or slipping. For this analysis, a -20% design perforation friction threshold (964 psi) was used to identify plug issues.  

The findings reveal that the SLB Reaxion dissolvable plugs experienced potential isolation issues, evidenced by their lower initial perforation friction. Furthermore, the larger dataset showed significant variance in the performance of the SLB dissolvables, likely due to a wider range of rates across more stages. In contrast, Kureha dissolvable plugs demonstrated higher perforation friction at a slightly lower rate, outperforming the SLB dissolvable models. SLB composite plugs recorded the highest initial perforation friction overall, pointing to the most reliable wellbore isolation among the tested options.  

Based on these operational indicators, the analysis provides a clear path forward for future completions. The study explicitly recommends switching to Kureha degradable plugs for better performance. Additionally, operators are advised to consider running composite plugs to ensure maximum isolation efficiency during fracturing operations.
